Spring Cleaning Tips
We are a month into spring and for many of us a month into a Stay-at-Home order than has us with idle hands. With so much time on our hands, many of us are electing to complete our spring cleaning chores we’ve been putting off.
However, starting a project as broad as “spring cleaning”can feel ominous and with our anxieties already at a peak from the COVID-19 pandemic– even with a seemingly endless amount of time – starting a project of that magnitude can feel daunting.
There’s something undoubtedly refreshing about a de-cluttered and clean home though, and these tried & tested tricks can help you tackle your spring cleaning project with ease.
1. It’s easy to get distracted when it comes to tackling a house full of projects. But, whenever possible stick to one room at a time. Dedicate hours (or a full weekend or two – if necessary) to each space, and don’t move onto the next until it’s complete.
2. Create a schedule to help you stay focused.
3. Start with the things you skip during “routine cleaning” – dust blinds, de-clutter junk drawers, throw out old makeup, etc.
4. Remember: Small projects can have a major impact.
o Clean doormats to refresh your entryway, you’ll be amazed at how much dirt accumulates there. Vacuum both sides of the mat to push all excess dirt out.
o Rub a lemon slice over cutting boards to eliminate stains and smell.
§ Throw used lemon slices into the garbage disposal to refresh your garbage disposal too!
5. Work from the top to the bottom.
o Start with the ceiling and move to the floor. Dirt, dust, and debris will fall onto your freshly cleaned floor if you do this in reverse.
6. Don’t forget about the walls!
o It’s easy to forget about how much attention our walls need, but once done – there can be a huge impact.
7. Don’t underestimate the power of natural cleaning products.
o Vinegar can take stains off walls, cabinets, and even hard water stains in bathtubs with more ease than any commercial cleaning product you can buy, and at a fraction of the price!
8. Don’t forget about your air filters!
o HVAC and furnace filters should be replaced regularly, yet it’s something we rarely remember to do.
9. Don’t overwhelm yourself
o Make sure you’re in the right mindset before starting a major project like reorganizing a closet or garage.
10. Don’t be afraid to throw things away
o If it hasn’t been used in years, if it’s just taking up space, and /or not bringing you joy – don’t be afraid to throw things out. Ask yourself “will I miss this if it’s gone?” – If not – do yourself a favor and de-clutter! Studies show that clutter causes anxiety and stress – and who needs that in their lives?
